The newly established Laboratory for Aerosols, Clusters and Environment at the Chair of Physical Chemistry (prof. U. Heiz) of the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Germany offers a PhD Position (66% TV-L E13) in Chemistry for Development of the State-of-the-Art Instrument for Aerosol Nucleation.
The position is funded by the German Research Foundation as part of an Emmy Noether starting grant focusing on the molecular understanding of new particle formation – one of the most critical atmospheric process with strong impact on climate and air quality. The project is centered on the development of a new experimental approach for aerosol nucleation combining multi-collisional conditions in ion traps, which integrates the complexity of large-scale aerosol chamber experiments with detailed insight of molecular beam techniques.
Prospective candidates have a degree in chemistry, physics or related fields and are highly motivated to work with sophisticated experimental setups. They have a willingness to learn about new techniques, good communication skills in English and enjoy working in a team atmosphere. While not strictly required, experience in instrumentation development is beneficial, since the major task is setting up the instrument. Previous laboratory experience with mass spectrometry, cluster science, electronics, and vacuum technology will also be of an advantage.
