5th HAAR Summer School

Theory and practice of aerosol chemistry and engineering for climate, air quality, emissions and health effects

(Lectures and hands-on training)

Navarino Environmental Observatory (NEO) Messinia, Greece

http://www.navarinoneo.gr/index.php/gr/

Greece 8-15th of June 2023

The objective of the summer school is to train young researchers (Master and PhD students mainly) on state-of-the-art instruments for determining the key properties of atmospheric aerosols, the tools for analyzing and interpreting the data, and the knowledge for putting those in the context of climate change. The summer school will be organized around lectures that will cover the basic theory followed by hands-on training on:

  1. in-situ instruments for measuring the concentration, size and chemical composition of atmospheric particles,
  2. new integrative approaches using models and observations for impact assessment.

Prof. Spyros Pandis was awarded the 2021 Vilhelm Bjerknes Medal of the EGU

The news just came out that Prof. Spyros Pandis was awarded the 2021 Vilhelm Bjerknes Medal of the EGU (https://www.egu.eu/awards-medals/vilhelm-bjerknes/). This is the highest distinction offered by the Atmospheric Sciences in Europe. The medal was named after Vilhelm Bjerknes (https://www.egu.eu/awards-medals/portrait-vilhelm-bjerknes/), whom lead the theoretical foundations of weather prediction and made groundbreaking contributions in all areas of atmospheric science (including cloud formation!).

The medal will be given this year during the EGU Annual Assembly in April, in a special ceremony organized by the Atmospheric Sciences Division. Because of the COVID situation, there will be webcasting of the event.

We should also remember that Maria Kanakidou is the 2016 (and only one of two female) recipients of the medal. A great honor to have both in PANACEA !

Report of actions and findings of the PANACEA RI on the COVID-19 pandemic

During the outbreak of the COVID19 pandemic crisis, PANACEA RI was immediately activated in order to utilize its know-how and the available equipment, to take a series of actions related to COVID19 and the measures to encounter with it , respectively reaching a number of interesting findings and conclusions.
Specifically, both the effect of measures taken to reduce the pandemic (lockdown) on air quality and the suitability of materials for their use in masks in order to protect human health, was examined.
